Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Lütfi Elvan’s idea of ‘leaving World Wide Web (www) and founding ttt’ was mocked on Twitter by European Parliament member Andrew Duff. Duff wrote Elvan is ‘clearly an idiot’.
AKP government’s crusade against internet and social media took a new turn as minister Lütfi Elvan suggested that countries and regions can create their own networks to keep their people safe and censored from dangerous ideas floating around the World Wide Web. Making sure people can only reach government approved information seems to be an important part of ruling AKP’s definition of democratic freedom. However minister Elvan’s most thought over and brilliant suggestion did not get the expected joyous reaction from the international community as Adrew Duff called him an ‘idiot’ in his tweet.
Andrew Duff later deleted his tweet and wrote “This man is clearly not an idiot.”, obviously understanding his mistake as surely his second tweet was sincere and not sarcastic at all.
It seems the AKP’s ministers of communication being experts on technology is traditional, for Elvan’s predecessor Binali Yıldırım once shared his opinion about Cloud computing with the words “If you think too much on information technologies you’ll go mad. One must use what they need but shouldn’t question its wisdom (the working mechanisms).”.
